Mr. Bonesby is an odd fellow. Once a butler to a prominent noble family, he was killed during an assassination attempt on the family when he attempted to protect the young master. Following his untimely death, Mr. Bonesby found his soul wandering in the aether until suddenly he was called back to the mortal plane via necromancy. It was here he discovered that the once young master had grown, learning necromancy in hopes of bringing his slaughtered family back to life. Unfortunately Mr. Bonesby was the only successful experiment by the young master, as the other souls had wandered 'too far' into the abyss to return.
The once young master was a talented albeit eccentric necromancer, having managed to bring Bonesby back into his own body and attaching his original soul. Sadly his body had decayed over the many years, leading to Mr. Bonesby having only a skeletal frame. Bonesby did not mind and was extremely grateful to his master for trying to revive him in the first place. He remained loyal to the young master until he was laid to rest after passing from old age. Oddly enough, unlike most necromantic summons, Mr. Bonesby found that he did not return to the aether upon his master's death. Something profound had occurred in his resurrection, giving Bonesby something unheard of before: immortality. Having lived for many years, Bonesby realized that he could not perish like other beings. He could be harmed, something he learned time and time again as he interacted with the mortals of the world who feared him. But after a bit of time, his broken bones would 'heal', returning him to a perpetual state of stasis. Some instances took longer, such as when he was ground to dust from a village particularly dead set on destroying what they viewed as an abomination. After a few months, the dust had formed back together and voila! One Mr. Bonesby was whole again. Having lived for thousands of years, Bonesby has learned the ways of the world and watched as time went by. He has seen the rise and fall of civilizations and known many a friend from a plethora of races and backgrounds. He has tried his hand at many past times and roles, having lived numerous 'lives'. Every new skill he brings with him into the future. Bonesby's greatest achievement, in his opinion, was when he realized that some of his master's talents had been passed onto him and through years of practice, he had become an impressive necromancer himself. He prefers to refer to himself as a 'skeleton doctor', as he is an avid skeletal being advocate and recognized a hole in the market for skeletal 'healthcare'. One could argue he is simply using necromancy, but he would beg to differ. Some may ask why the butler outfit, to which Bonesby would reply 'It is simply what I am used to.' While he has lived many years, it seems there are some things that have not changed. His name, a moniker given to him upon his rebirth by his former master, is another example of something he has kept over time. Plus, he simply finds it amusing. |
